NSF certification replaced the potable water treatment additives testing and approval process that was administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency since the early 1970's. The EPA decided in 1985 to privatize this function and it selected NSF International to administer a voluntary third party program for setting consensus standard and certifying product compliance.
